Ideal Settings for Running Keyzapp in Kiosk Mode (Windows)

Keyzapp's Kiosk Mode is designed to make it effortless to sign keys in and out from a single computer (often positioned next to the key cabinet).  The user simply scans their ID card and fob to log in. They can then search for, sign in and sign out keys in seconds.
In order for this to work at its best, the computer running Kiosk Mode should be set up in the following way.
This article is intended for advanced users or IT Administrators
Note to large IT departments: It is important to ensure that the computer running the Keyzapp Kiosk is not subjected to Group Policies which overwrite these settings, or Keyzapp Users may receive a sub-optimal experience.

Networking Settings

  • No access to internal network computers or shared drives.  This is often best achieved by running the Kiosk PC under a local user account with no network permissions.  Local Admin permissions are not required except for initial install.
  • Permanent, reliable internet access.  No other access to the corporate network is needed.  Keyzapp connects to the cloud over the internet using SSL/HTTPS.  If the office has a "Guest Network", this will suffice.

User Account Settings

  • Default Browser set to Google Chrome.  Google Chrome should be downloaded to facilitate this.
  • Desktop Icon set to open Google Chrome in Kiosk Mode.  See this article for instructions.
  • Windows Password removed or all password prompts disabled. Windows passwords prevent the quick sign-in and sign-out of keys.  If the computers access to other resources on the network is prevented by the steps above, then having no password prompts does not pose a security risk.

Windows Settings

  • Lock Screen Disabled.  Lock screens prevent the fast running of the system. We suggest they are disabled.
  • Automatic Sleep and Turn Off Disabled: In Power Management Settings, set automatic sleep and power off settings to NEVER.  This prevents the system powering down, so its always ready to use.
