Creating Communal Keys, or keys for Shared Access

Creating Communal Keys, or keys for Shared Access

In situations where a key is needed to access a shared entrance or area, eg in a block of flats, it is easy to create a separate keyring and set up a link to the keyrings for all properties which use this shared access.  It is useful where the shared entrance key is kept separate from individual property keys, or for people such as maintenance staff, who might not have access to individual properties.

Create a new Property

A shared address is required, so create a new property using a generic address:

Assign a keyfob and keyring

  1. Tap or scan a keyfob in the usual way, and assign a keyhook.
  2. Check the Communal Key box.  If this is not visible, or has a different name, please contact Support to have this feature adapted to your requirements.
  3. Create the keyring.

More detailed information on choosing a keyhook can be found here.

The new keyring screen will be slightly different from the usual one, using a "chain link" icon to identify this key as one which is shared by a number of properties.

From here, you can link any individual properties where access will also require this key.

The Property Screen for any property which is included on a linked, communal key, will list the shared key under the property keyrings.

It is useful to add a reminder to staff that two sets of keys are needed.

The way in which you assign and store keys for shared access areas is completely flexible within Keyzapp.  Please contact us if you would like to discuss adapting to your own requirements.
